Part 14 of our series, we cover a dynamic, rising, youth powered, Volunteer based NGO named UPAY (UnderPriveleged’s Advancement by Youth) They began their journey in 2011 with 2 like minded people and 15 underprivileged students, with a vision to overcome disparities in education field.

Footpathshala initiative started under UPAY NGO Nagpur Zone

The foundation of development for every society is the education of its youth. Keeping this in mind, an NGO, UPAY (Underprivileged Advancement by Youth), was founded in May 2010 by a group of young engineers. Its main aim was to provide opportunities to underprivileged children and bring smiles on their dejected faces. On 19.09.2011, UPAY was registered as an NGO under Society Registration Act 1860 and Mumbai Public Trust act 1950(Reg No-Maharashtra/268/2011/Bhandara).

Interaction with RJ Shubham on UPAY’s pioneer “Footpathshala” a street school initiative, which reaches to the door steps of slum and street children who are found begging at traffic signals. It believes that if they can’t reach to schools; let the schools reach to them. This unique initiative has been running in Nagpur at 10 centres now and around 500 street children have been reached out. Around 80 young volunteers, mostly engineers, doctors, teachers, professors from reputed institutes are helping this initiative achieve various milestones.

UPAY has started an initiative named “Footpathshala” with an aim to replace begging bowls with books. The hands begging at the traffic signals are given an opportunity to live a better life. A large population of our country still lives below poverty line and do not have clothes to wear and food to eat.

Founder of UPAY and its pioneer initiative Footpathshala, Mr. Varun Shrivastava in conversation with News Nation TV anchor at Maharajbag, Nagpur centre. Footpathshala is an initiative where Doctors, Engineers, Professors and college students reach out to teach those children who live on footpaths and beg at traffic signals. UPAY has replaced these begging bowls with books.

Children who beg at traffic signals are getting education through this initiative which aims to bring schools to streets.
